Kyocera and Murata both reportedly plan to expand their MLCC production capacities in Japan.
Kyocera is evaluating its plan to build a new facility to expand MLCC production capacity for growing demand for automotive and smartphones, according to a recent Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun report. Construction of the new facility, which will be located at Kyocera’s Kokubu manufacturing complex in Kagoshima prefecture, is scheduled for completion in 2021, the report said. About JPY6 billion (US$53.3 billion) will be invested in Kyocera’s new MLCC facility, the report added.
Murata plans to construct a new facility for the production of MLCCs in Shimane prefecture, Nikkei Business Daily reported on September 25. An estimated JPY40 billion will be poured into the new facility construction which is scheduled for completion by the end of the company’s fiscal year 2019, according to the report.
Murata is expected to expand its overall MLCC production capacity by 20% at the end of the company’s fiscal year ended March 31, 2019, the report said. The planned expansion is to respond to growing demand for automotive and smartphones.
On the heels of the Nikkei report, Murata announced that subsidiary Izumo Murata Manufacturing located in Izumo (Shimane prefecture, Japan) will commence construction of a new production facility in October 2018 to build additional capacity for ceramic multilayer capacitors. The company expects to complete constructing the new facility in November 2019.
Murata CEO Tsuneo Murata was quoted in a Reuters report saying the tight MLCC supply will likely persist for another two years. The supply has been particularly tight in the automotive industry, the report cited Murata as indicating.
