In recent months, the shortage of Intel CPUs has affected the industry, according to Wong, Intel hasn’t given its downstream partners a clear schedule for when the shortage might be solved, leading Wong to conclude that the shortages could last for at least another year.
Acer recently said that Intel’s CPU shortages have started impacting the whole notebook market, DigiTimes said in its report. Inventec, another Taiwan, China ODM, has also had to cut its growth expectations for the third and fourth quarter this year to single-digit growth, according to the report.
At the time, however, this seems to be the partner OEM/ODM, sure to make a considerable impact on the notebook market and this is why already at work to review the estimates of growth on a quarterly and annual basis. Companies like Acer are convinced that the lack of Intel CPU impact on the global market of notebook, while an ODM such as Winstron has already revised the estimates of growth on a quarterly basis by 5-10% to a maximum of 5%.
The increased market share of AMD is partly the result of its competitive Zen architecture, which has helped make its Ryzen CPUs a popular alternative to Intel; and partly down to the loosening of its ties with GlobalFoundries, enabling AMD to source its products from TSMC as well.
The new ties to TSMC will help AMD overtake Intel in terms of process architectures, with the company’s second-generation Ryzen CPUs now being manufactured on 12nm processes and set to shift to 7nm very soon – while Intel struggles to make the leap from 14nm to 10nm.
